WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?
Facial fillers (otherwise known as dermal fillers) are injectable gels used to restore or add volume to the face. Fillers vary in density (thickness), which determines the area they can be used in and what they’re designed for, whether that is to provide lift or contouring, create symmetry, fill in lines or deep folds, or enhance a particular feature such as the lips.
Your body is able to break the filler down naturally and eventually the results will fade.
Facial fillers may be used as an alternative to surgery, helping you to avoid invasive and expensive procedures.
WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS USED FOR?
Hyaluronic acid facial fillers are injectable treatments that can be used to either refresh your look or enhance your features.
Improve and revive your under-eye area
Adding fullness to your cheeks
Softening and smoothing lines around the mouth
Lifting and projecting your cheeks for a more defined look
Plumping your lips adding volume, improving lip shape and definition
Evening out a bump on the nose
Contouring your chin and jawline
HOW LONG IS THE PROCEDURE?
Each treatment lasts between 30 and 45 minutes depending on the area. Full effects are at their best around 14 days after treatment and last anything between 6-18 months.
IS IT PAINFUL?
A topical numbing cream is used for wrinkles to minimise pain and for lip fillers an optional dental block to completely numb the mouth is also offered. Some of the fillers used also contain anaesthetic, which will make the treatment even more comfortable.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME?
There is often no obvious evidence of treatment, depending on area treated, however it can result in temporary swelling and bruising of varying degrees. Swelling tends to last around 2-3 days, sometimes longer. Bruising can last anything from a few days up to 14 days, depending on severity and individual healing process.
WHEN COULD I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?
Results are visible shortly after treatment. Most people return to their normal routine on the day they are treated or a few days after, depending on treatment received. Best results are seen after 14 days.
ARE DERMAL FILLERS SAFE?
Yes, as long as they are administered by a fully trained, fully insured professional aesthetic practitioner. The hyaluronic gel is completely natural, and over time, the filler will slowly dissolve, causing no harm to you.
CAUTIONS/CONTRA INDICATIONS
You should not have fillers if you have severe allergies, are under 18 or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF DERMAL FILLERS?
Potential side effects associated with dermal fillers include temporary injection-site reactions such as:
Redness
Swelling
Itching
Pain
Tingling/numbness
Firmness/bumps
Bruising
Discolouration
These reactions may occur immediately or may be delayed, and can last for a week or two. Injection in the lip may cause more swelling and bruising due to the unique physiology of this area. As with any injection, there is a risk of infection.
If inflammatory reactions persist for more than one week, or if any other side effects develop, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
